A plain-language guide to ingredients often used in creams for oily, blemish-prone, dry or sensitive skin. What each one does for skin, and what reactions are possible.
The base
One daily base cream, eight concerns
Every Sylora cream is a daily face cream for a simple routine: apply a thin layer after cleansing, and use SPF in the morning. The full ingredient list for each cream is coming soon. We only list what the manufacturer confirms.
Niacinamide
Vitamin B3- What it does for skin
- Helps skin look more balanced and even, and helps absorb the look of excess shine.
- Possible skin reactions
- Usually well tolerated. Some people notice warmth, redness or tingling, especially when starting.
Salicylic acid (BHA)
Oil-soluble exfoliant- What it does for skin
- Gently loosens dead skin on the surface and helps pores look clearer and more refined.
- Possible skin reactions
- Can cause dryness, flaking or stinging. Not for people with an aspirin allergy. Use SPF, and don't layer with other strong exfoliants.
Azelaic acid
Exfoliating acid- What it does for skin
- Helps skin look smoother and the tone look brighter and more even.
- Possible skin reactions
- Can tingle, itch or sting at first. Can cause dryness.
Ceramides
Skin lipids- What it does for skin
- Support the skin's moisture barrier and help skin feel soft and comfortable.
- Possible skin reactions
- Rarely irritating. Stop using a product if your skin reacts.
Hyaluronic acid
Humectant- What it does for skin
- Draws in water for a hydrated, plump-feeling surface.
- Possible skin reactions
- Rarely irritating. In very dry air, follow with a cream so skin doesn't feel tight.
Centella asiatica
Plant extract- What it does for skin
- Gives skin a soothing feel and helps calm the look of redness.
- Possible skin reactions
- Plant extracts can cause allergic reactions in some people. Patch-test first.
Zinc PCA
Zinc salt- What it does for skin
- Helps skin look less shiny and feel fresh and balanced.
- Possible skin reactions
- Usually well tolerated. Can feel drying for very dry skin.
Tea tree oil
Essential oil- What it does for skin
- Gives skin a fresh, clean feel.
- Possible skin reactions
- Can irritate or sensitise skin, especially in higher amounts. Patch-test first, and stop if your skin reacts.
